Introduction to the Volkswagen Booth of the 35th TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

"Volkswagen. Beyond Expectations"

At the 35th TOKYO MOTOR SHOW Volkswagen Japan is promoting the emotionally added, and dynamically changing Volkswagen brand under the theme "Volkswagen. Beyond Expectations" to people in Japan and from all over the worfd. As the company's name indicates, Volkswagen was based on the concept of a "people's = Volks car=Wagen" when founded in Germany in 1938. Today, over 60 years later, Volkswagen is further enhancing the traditional principles of "quality, durability, reliability and functionality" faithfully following the basic principle, "to be the best in every class!" while and at the same time deployed new strategies including platform and multi-brand strategies. As a result, designs and equipment have improved and the line-up now includes not only compact cars but full-sized premium cars that are high in quality and performance. During the Tokyo Motor Show, Volkswagen is displaying its full line-up from compact car and middle class car to premium car, including new Volkswagen Passat W8. Enjoy the dynamics of progress and renovation of Volkswagen brand.

INTRODUCTION OF EXHIBITS
  • Lupo
    Lupo was launched just in July 2001 as the smallest and the most compact type model in the VW line-up ever introduced. The model is characterised by its excellent performance embodied through the up-to-date VW technology and craftsmanship as well as its cute but robust design generating a unique impact. The front view of Lupo is high-lighted by the round shape head lamps thereby generating an overall elegant configurative atmosphere. The new generation engine is 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder in-line, 16-valve, DOHC boasting poweful and clean mechanism while the interior is beautifully furnished with the body colour coordination. In addition, the dashboard with a high quality layout and the seats with an excellent holding effect ensure the highest level of state-of-the-art technological excellence. The safety measures have also been well focused such as the upgraded body rigidity, the front seat side airbags to say nothing of the ABS system as well. At the Motor Show, Volkswagen exhibits "Lupo Comfort Package" that has fully embodied the sturdy basic performances for both practicality and comfort as German heritage. "No compromise even for a compact car" has been a strong corporate creed of Volkswagen in the car manufacturing and visitors are cordially invited to the Volkswagen Booth so as to have a look at the new model for identifying the "Value beyond the size" that Lupo offers the customers in the market place.

  • Polo
    The third generation Polo was superbly upgraded in the traditional Volkswagen car manufacturing - more than 60% of the model was redesigned and widely refined for introduction to the Japanese market in May 2000. The third generation Polo has embodied a concept of "High-quality-high-performance" that clearly typifies "Car value for the future". In addition to the body with much enhanced strength, durability and quality as well as the robust and beautiful contour, its engine block consists of two versions - namely aluminium 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter 4-cylinder in-line DOHC 16-valve ensuring both fuel efficiency and power output in parallel. The interior was also much upgraded focusing to "functionality and comfort" by using superior quality elements thereby youthful and sporty atmosphere is generated from the overall disposition of the cabin quality. At the Show, Volkswagen exhibits "Polo GTI" with 5-speed M/T and equipped with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder in-line DOHC 16-valve engine that marvellously attracts owners with its strong power boosting and response.

  • Golf
    Ever since its initial launch in 1974, Golf has been consistently satisfying the respective new values and standards of each era. Each time of its model changes, the design and peformance have been refined and renewed targeting at the best quality level and Golf has been remaining as the leading model in this class and keeping up its unshakable position in the market place. All models are now fitted with the up-to-date safety device that controls side-sliding in cornering thereby their high basic peformance has been further elevated. At the Show, Volkswagen exhibits "Golf GTl" with 1.8-liter 4-cylinder in-line turbo-charged 20-valve DOHC power train furnished with black wood panel, leather fitted parking brake lever, steering wheel and other enriched attractive interior craftsmanship. GTI that is exhibited is 5-speed A/T furnished with Tiptronic.


  • Golf Wagon
    With those excellent basic performances unchanged, Golf Wagon provides a 460-liter spacious luggage compartment and bright and open style cabin comfort. The model boasts its status as a high quality stylish wagon beyond its category. With its both excellent practicality and refined configurative form at the high dimension level, all Golf Wagon models are also furnished with the up-to-date safety device ESP to control side sliding in cornering like Golf as the standard equipment thereby ensuring further strengthening up of the active safety. While Golf Wagon-E is equipped with the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder in-line engine, Golf Wagon GLi is with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in-line version. At the Show, Golf Wagon GLi that offers a fun to drive with comfort, beautifully configured in mono colour for the body and parts is exhibited.


  • New Beetle
    The cutting edge technology has created a whole new realm for the "New Beetle", yet it bears a close resemblance of the original Beetle by its many features inherited, including a rotund exterior as a motif, a round meter and a flower vase. Its impressive form and contour that catch the eyes of people at a glance inherits the enduring love and respect to the original Beetle. The power train is 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in-line with front wheel driving so as to optimise the cabin space. The model is also furnished with the up-to-date safety standard specifications such as ABS, front seat air bags and side air bags. In addition to the basic performances such as "sense of security", "comfort" and "sturdiness", the New Beetle is a car that was superimposed a well-designed emotional charm on the top of its originality. At the Show, Volkswagen exhibits the "New Beetle Plus" with leather seats, 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels and power glass slidingroof.

  • New Beetle RSi
    The New Beetle RSi has been enthusiastically welcomed in the market place all over the world ever since its debut at the Detroit Motor Show 1999 and the Geneva Motor Show in 2000. The limited version of 250 units (Japan allocation 45 units) with highly concentrated technology and equipment which were acquired in the course of various severe races demonstrating all of the Volkswagen's manufacturing excellence and rich racing technology, is a model with the extremely scarcity value. The body is 90 mm wider than the normal New Beetle while its 18-inch wide tyres, large sized rear wing and twin exhaust pipe remind every one of a configuration of racing machines. On the other hand, the interior layout embodies sporty but high quality cabin atmosphere thanks to rich use of the leather, aluminium and carbon elements. The power train is Volkswagen's original reinforced 3.2-liter 6-cylinder, narrow angle of 15° 24 V 24-valve engine. In order to transmit the strongest power output, a full time 4WD system "4-Motion" has been adopted in addition to the strengthening up of the front and rear suspension systems. For controlling instable driving reactions, the up-to-date ESP is the standard equipment that ensures highly stable and safety driving as well as surplus driving performance even under the normal driving condition.   • Bora
    Named after the bracing winds that blow across the Adriatic Sea, Bora with its stylish and beautiful configurative form features its presence as the premium sedan. The interior adopts walnut panelling and a wood shift knob worthy of the premium sedan for all versions while the wipers with rain sensor and rear view mirror, self-dimming are also standard equipments. In addition, as convenient devices, automatic air conditioner, heatable front seats are also avaiiable as standards thereby highly elegant quality and driving comfort have been realised for whole cabin. 3 types of power trains were set up: a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder in-line, 2.3-liter V 5-cylinder and 2.8-liter V 6-cylinder all ensuring dynamic driving to users. Additionally, ESP for totally controlling the instable running such as side sliding is the standard equipment for all modeis to further elevate the safety level. At the Show, Volkswagen exhibits "Bora V6 4-motion" fitted with the 2.8-liter V 6-cylinder 24-valve engine, 6-speed M/T, full time 4WD system "4-motion" system.

  • New Passat / New Passat Wagon
    "Passat" that is a premium model in the upper middle class of the Volkswagen line-up and "Passat Wagon" were reborn with total refurbishing of the exterior, interior and performance. 3 models such as V5, V6 and V6 4-Motion have been lined up with the overall configurative form adopting chromium elements, impressive aluminium wheels thereby embodying an emotional and robust image. Likewise, the interior layout adopting the leather and walnut wood meets a sophisticated cabin atmosphere generating a highly luxury image worthy of the upper middle class vehicles. 2 types of power trains were set up : 2.3-liter V 5-cylinder and 2.8-liter V 6-cylinder DOHC respectively while all models are furnished with the 5-speed A/T Tiptronic. At the Show, Volkswagen exhibits the New Passat Wagon V6 4-Motion equipped with the full time 4WD system "4-Motion" strongly derived from the "New Passat Wagon" line-up. "Passat W8" newly furnished with the Volkswagen's originality 4-liter W-type 8-cylinder engine as a reference model at the same time.
