Highlights at Subaru

  • Driving Emotion
    Subaru emphasizes "Driving emotion," the theme of this Show, in all exhibits. Subaru appeals its philosophy of building cars as making driving pleasure in various ways, such as through unique Subaru AWD technology. Driving is not only one of the basic functions of vehicles, it also comprises essential appeal. Throughout Subaru's history, the company has developed unique technology and incorporated it into any vehicles it has built. During that time, it has raised the quality of the driving function of its vehicles by fine-tuning them to fit the likes and sensitivities of its customers. As is fitting for the approaching new age, Subaru will continue in the future to raise the level of driving enjoyment its vehicles provide. It will fuse its distinctive AWD and other know-how with rapidly evolving digital technology.

Main Exhibit
Main Stage

On display on the Main Stage are examples of Subaru's unique and highly sophisticated traction control technology that contributes to enabling its customers to experience enjoyable driving. The exhibit readily demonstrates Subaru's leading technology. Depictions of drive control mechanisms and dazzling live videos of the Subaru vehicles being driven on various types of roads are projected onto an adjustable screen. Visitors can also enjoy the excitement of experiencing the actual feel of driving by watching an AV Show highlighted a full-size, transparent Legacy model being driven on a fantasy road drawn in space by laser beams. This Main Stage presentation will enable viewers to enjoy themselves while understanding more clearly the direction in which Subaru is moving to build and provide cars to its customers that let them experience the sheer enjoyment of driving and that demonstrate Subaru's thinking about technology, the superiority of its AWD system, and its approach to environmental considerations.

Concept Car Stage
  • WX-01
    The principal design motif of the WX-01, sitting prominenlty on the stage, is triangularity, as seen in its triangular headlights, a refined form that gives it a storty appearance. The WX-01 defines Subaru's concept of the ideal grand touring car of the future. The vehicle's guiding design philosophy expresses the totally new concept of a "5+2" sevenpassenger car. Subaru's leading-edge technology enables customers to enjoy driving this multi-passenger car.
    <Features>
    Equipped with an independent AWD system with torque distribution. Unanticipated vehicle movementscaused by changes linked to the various driving situations that occur on roads are suppressed, allowing drivers to control their car as they wish, thus achieving high vehicle stability.
    Multi-Materials Technology is used in the construction of the chassis and body. It teatures a combination of different materials, each chosen for is specific function.
    While carefully attending to realizing a globally acceptable design, the WX-01 attracts viewers with its distinctive individuality, highlighted by a sporty and refined exterior design. The use of special metallic paint results in an attractive, smooth, purple body finish.

  • HM-01
    Subaru engineers emphasized the basic design theme of an "emotional compact car" as they developed the HM-01. The result is a next-generation hybrid compact having a low environmental impact and assuring an enjoyable driving experience. In addition, a new type of hybrid AWD system based on an innovative concept was developed for the drive system in the quest for new AWD technology to be used with oompacts.
    <Features>
    The HM-01's fender lines are reminiscent of the Subaru 306's styling in 1958, giving the HM-01 an exterior appearance that expresses both soprtiness and a retro-modem feeling. The simply designed instrument panel looks much like a long curved pipe. Overall, a strongly individualistic pop style has been created for the interior design.
    Newly developed hybrid AWD system has two power sources. An inline, 4-cylinder, 658cc engine that has the iCVT transmission fitted with an idling-stop function drives the front wheels, and an electric drive unit with a 42-volt electric motor that allows on-demand torque distribution drives the rear wheels.
    Electricity is generated in a dual-voltage system (14V+42V). The 42V system drives the belt drive starter and the rear drive unit. The main battery is a 36-volt sealed lead battery that provides outstanding life-cycle costs, from manufacture to discard.
    The newly developed electric rear drive unit is compact and light, making it possible to fit it into the space for the existing mechanical rear differential gear unit. It allows the best use of the rear suspension while providing a superior running performance possible only because it is Subaru.

  • Impreza WRC 2001
    On display here is the Impreza, Subaru's image leader in world motor sports. This model competes in world rally car races around the world. A video presentation shows highlights of the Impreza's performance, and gives visitors a thorough orientation of Subaru's presence in world motor sports.

Show Models
  • Legacy B4 Blitzen 2002 Model
    This model is a new, sportier version of the highly popular Legacy Blitzen. The exterior, with its emphasis on functionalism, is the result of a joint design effort by Subaru and Porsche Design. It has clean body surfaces devoid of excess lines. The resultant smooth body design provides the Legacy B4 Blitzen with an even stronger feeling of presence than the previous model.

  • Legacy Touring Wagon Avignon
    This is a sporty station wagon developed on the concept of a "Fresh blue breeze". The model has been dressed up especially to attract older persons who are young at heart. The vehicle's interior and exterior colors are blended to provide an image of the seacoast in southern France-blue sea, white-walled homes, and orange-tiled roofs. The exterior design accentuates the Legacy's dignified form while also producing a feeling of strength. One of its main attractions is its beauty in a setting of resort living.

  • Impreza Sports Wagon type Euro
    This is a special model in Subaru's lineup, as well as the Legacy Blitzen, whose exterior was designed by Porsche Design. The massive feeling of the overall body coupled with its clean lines gives this version of the Impreza a sportier appearance than previously. The viewer imagines an object that has virtually been sculpted into the shape of a car from a huge block of aluminum. The special silver body finish emphasizes the luster of the metal.

  • Pleo Surfing
    The way a computer nerd nimbly moves about surfing the Internet was borrowed as the image for developing this vehicle. The emphasis is thus on the vehicle's nimbleness in city driving, and its design emphasizes its position as a sporty compact. This version of the Pleo is a design study model, successfully conveying a feeling of graceful volume, usually difficult to express in a compact. The pleasing exterior is coupled with an interior finished with pop styling.

  • ST-X
    After developing and designing this 4-seat pickup, Subaru of America introduced it last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The base car is the Outback.* Its 2500cc, 4-cylinder, water-cooled, horizontally opposed engine is equipped with a supercharger for additional power. A switchback system allows the rear seats to be folded down for opening additional space forward for luggage, turning the ST-X into a multi-purpose vehicle.
    *The Japanese domestic model is called the Lancaster.

Electric Vehicle Pavillion
  • Sambar EV
    The complete Sambar packaging is used in this electric vehicle. A permanent magnet synchronous motor is paired with sealed batteries, enabling a driving feel similar to an A/T vehicle. The battery system allows operation without recharging up to a distance of 110km. Because the batteries are located under the floor, the Sambar EV also offers roomier utility space inside.
