The manufacturer of the world's oldest
car brand, Mercedes-Benz, DaimlerChrysler is also the leading manufacturer
of heavy-duty trucks. At the 34th Tokyo Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz
presents the Actros, which has been developed to realize the innovative
concept of "a truck that features not only the greatest economy,
buo also low life cycle costs and incomparable levels of safety
and environmental comparibility. "The show provides the first
occasion to display the new Unimog to the Japanese public. |
This multipurpose work vehicle has
been fully restyled for the first time in 26 years to improve ease
of operation, economic efficiency, and comfort. A special display
at the Mercedes stand is the DISCOS Trailar Axle System, which has
been developed using DaimlerChrysler's heavy truck axle technology.
The Mercedes stand provides a serene space by using wood to set
the keynote. At the same time, aluminum pipes and other materials
are used in some parts for accentuation, echoing the modern and
innovative character of the Stuffgart-based manufacturer. |
Mercedes-Benz Actros
The modern Actros truck has been developed to meet every demanding
need of transport operators. With the introduction of the Telligent
systems based on advanced Mercedes technologies for truck components
such as the engine, suspension, braking system, and frame, the
Actros sets new standards in the segment of heavy-duty trucks.
The Actors' low fuel consumption and servcing costs increase its
overall economy; the various resource-saving and emission control
technologies contribute to achieving high environmental compatibility.
The outstanding levels of safety and comfort allow for smooth
haulage journeys.
The Actros powertrain range consists of newly developed intercooled
turbodiesel engines. Compact and lightweight, the engines feature
low fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. To provide high
levels of economy and power under different operating conditions,
an eight-speed transmission with high and low ranges(16 speeds)is
combined with the innovative Telligent gearshift system. Thanks
to that new gearshift system, the driver can select the gear optimally
suited to driving conditions by simply touching the shift lever
forwards or backwards. The Actros also offers exceptional cost
efficiency and durability: the truck is designed for an overhaul
cycle of roughly one million kilometers and requires oil servcing
only every 100,000km in long-dinstance haulage.
The Actros is fitted with the innovative Telligent full air suspension
system which provides excellent vibration characteristics for
not only the cargo, but also for the vehicle, road, and driver.
This system uses electronic control to maintain a stable vehicle
position and, thanks to a level adjustment facility, increases
the efficiency of material handling.
The Actros has a host of advanced safety features typical of a
Mercedes. The ventilated disk brakes combine with the new Telligent
brake system, shortening the Actros' braking distance. Standartd
equipment of the Actros also includes ABS, acceleration skid control(ASR),
and an SRS airbag/belt tensioner for the driver.
DISCOS Trailer System
DaimlerChrysler engineers have applied their high technologies
for truck disk brakes and air suspension to the development of
an innovative trailer axle system featuring high levels of economy,
safety, and environmental compatibility. This system is called
DISCOS.
The ventilated disk brakes employed in DISCOS Trailer System not
only reduce the trailer's stopping distance dramatically, but
also provide excellent anti-fading capability and allow a servicing
interval twice as long as that of drum brakes. The air suspention
is able to efficiently damp vibration and oscillation, thereby
reducing damage to cargo and stress on the trailer body. The level
adjustment facility increases the efficiency of material handling.
At the same time this function maintains a constant vehicle height,
providing a higher loading capacity than a leaf spring suspension.
The "Quick Align" function permits the axle to be installed
at a right angle with the trailer frame. This alignment not only
facilitates servicing, but also substantially increases fuel economy
and tire life.
The optional Electronic Braking System(EBS) uses a computer to
automatically control the brake performance that varies with the
amount and arrangement of cargo. Thanks to this electronic control,
EBS greatly increases the safety of trailer operation. It reduces
the trailer's stopping distance and suppresses the critical jackknife
phenomenon that may occur during full braking.

Unimog
DaimlerCrysler AG is launching new Unimog ranges which, from the
point view of economy and technology, have been specifically designed
to satisfy the changed requirements of industry, local authorities,
the construction and energy industries and road-maintenace departments
concering flexible implement carriers and poweful tractors.
Excellent view
The outward appearance of the new Unimog generation provides evidence
of the field-related orientation of the numerous innovations incorporated.
The large windscreen, the low-edged side windows and a large rear
window ensure excellent all-round vision. The cab made of lightweight
fiber composite is characterized by great strength and anti-corrosion
properties. The optional transferable steering system, Variopilot,
in conjunction with the power hydraulics system, VarioPower, allows
a single operator to work safely with and control several implements
simultaneously.
Comfortable Cabin
Inside the cab, the driver finds a workplace that leaves nothing
to be desired with regard to ride comfort, equipment control and
functionality. All important controls for the vehicle, the electronically
controlled Telligent transmission and the VarioPower hydraulics,
are combined in the center console. Comfortable seats with integrated
3-point seat belts, a heating and ventilation system and an air-conitioning
system fitted as standard are further examples of field and requirement-oriented
solutions integrated into the new Unimag.
Environmentally engine
Propulsion for the new Unimog vehicles is provided by environmentally
compatible Euro 3 diesel engine. They transfer their tractive
force to the four permanently driven wheels by means of a fully
synchronized manual transmission.
Ideal gearshift system Telligent
Up to 24 gears are selected by means of the electropneumatic Tellignet
gearshift system, that has already proven itself in Mercedes-Benz
heavy-duty trucks over a period of some years now. With this system,
the driver moves the gear knob forwards and backwards within a
single gate. The appropriate gear is calculated automatically
by the vehicle electronics and engagede by a pneumatic cylinder
in the transmission when the clutch is depressed. The new Unimog
series have permanent all-wheel drive with an inter axle differential.
The differential locks-standard on the rear axle, optional for
the front axle can be activated/deactivated while driving at any
speed.
For the heavy load
To assist transporting and towing heavy loads, the vehicles can
be fitted with an optional torque converter clutch which offers
power transmission up to 230hp.
Versatile Implement carrier
The new Unimog ranges offer four attachment and mouting areas(at
the front, at the rear, in the middle/on the platform and between
the axles) with integrated interfaces to enable them to be equipped
with an almost unlimited number of working implements that are
required, for example, for the care and maintenance of the roads,
for winter service or for use in the construction industly.
All year round operation
Available for driving and controlling the various combination
of implements are single or double-circuit working hydraulics
with joystick control for up to eight implement movements. Also
available are the VarioPower hydraulics for driving loads in the
upper power range, such as mowers or sweepers. A mechanical live
PTO shaft at the front end of the vehicle, with a power output
of up to 204hp, comletes the range of equipment available. This
ensures that existing working implements can continue to be used.
