Presenting the Volkswagen Booth at the 37th Tokyo Motor Show

At the 37th Tokyo Motor Show, Volkswagen showcases its theme of "Brand Evolution."
Since its foundation, Volkswagen has remained true to the pursuit of its own brand core values: Quality, Durability, Reliability, and Functionality, and has given birth to numerous world-popular products. Now that we have entered the 21st century, Volkswagen continues its quest for further evolution in a bid to become a full-line car manufacturer, each model of which is to be "best in class," while adding sharper definition to its image as a youthful, innovative and distinctive automotive brand.
In the vanguard of the Volkswagen array on display will be new models, one of which embodies for the first time the new brand image within the Japanese Volkswagen line-up, the Touareg, as well as the New Beetle Cabriolet. These will be featured along with Volkswagen's full line-up from compact cars to premium automobiles. To highlight Volkswagen's "Brand Evolution," the New Golf, the Touran, and the Multivan that have only recently been presented in the brand's homeland, Germany, will also be on show. Last, but not least, another highlight of the show will be the design study of a sports car named Concept R. In short, the 37th Tokyo Motor Show promises to be a prophetic harbinger of the dynamic changes expected of the Volkswagen brand.

Concept Car
The Concept R

The Concept R is Volkswagen's proposal for a sports car of the new age. Its dynamic styling, the look of which can be likened to an animal ready to pounce at any moment, represents Volkswagen's prospect for the future, at the same time implying the possibility of the brand's entry into the sports car segment. Its midship-mounted 3.2-litre V6 produces a generous maximum output of 195kW (265PS) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. The power is transmitted to the rear axle via Volkswagen's innovative six-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG) to create an acceleration performance of 0 to 100km/h in a mere 5.3 seconds. While the actual top speed is limited to 250 km/h by an electronic device, its theoretical maximum speed is 270 km/h.

Technology on Display
2.0-litre FSI

The newly developed 2.0-litre FSI engine is the latest direct-injection gasoline engine in the new generation of Volkswagen engines. Using state-of-the-art technologies such as a variable air intake system and a high-pressure fuel injection system to achieve a uniform combustion, it provides enhanced power and response while reducing fuel consumption drastically. The FSI engine is not only powerful and economical, but also environmentally-friendly, meeting the stringent Euro 4 emission standard. This 2.0-litre FSI engine is due to be mounted on some of the New Golfs.

4.0-litre W8

The 4.0-litre W8 engine mounted in the Passat W8 4MOTION (and the Passat Wagon W8 4MOTION) is an innovative eight-cylinder unit that incorporates a number of advanced technologies, such as the W-shaped cylinder layout with Volkswagen's unique extremely-narrow 15-degree V-angle. For an eight-cylinder engine of this capacity, it is exceptionally lightweight and compact. It also has sporty characteristics rarely found in this engine category. In ordinary use, the engine runs smoothly and quietly, but once you step on the accelerator, outstanding power and torque are delivered instantaneously, along with a sensual and exciting W8 sound.
