Highlights of the Yamaha Booth

The Yamaha Booth for the 35th Tokyo Motor Show is disigned around the theme of "Touching Your Heart." A motorcycle is more than just the sum of its specifications tangibles such as power output, torque and structural details. intangible elements like the joy of riding it, its sound and pulse, its styling ; these are all important aspects of the motorcycle sa well.
One of our ongoing technological challenges in motorcycle design lies this important realm of performance that can only be measured by the human senses. At Yamaha we call this "Man-Machine Sensuality." To help visetors experience what we mean by "Man-Machine Sensuality" the central area of the booth has been designed with creative structures that incorporate a world fo sound and pulse created by means of a "Octaphonic" 3-dimensional sound system designed in collaboration with Yamaha Corporation along with motorcycle sound simulators that combine to offer up a new world of motorcycle experinece.

The central creation in this space is a V4 engine sculpture. This is a creation that transcends the common image of a motor in expressing the immense power of a large displacement engine and the sound ans pulse that is unique to a V engine. This sculpture is wrapped in a space designed to represent the concept of an incubator to create a powerful expression of the "life force" embodied in a V engine.
Displayed around the sculpture space are the reborn 2002 European market model of the supersport YZF-R1 and the TDM900 sports bike, and the new "performance cruiser" Warrior for the North American market. Also on display you will see the more fully equipped new Majesty and Majesty C Type and the new, more powerful TW225 bored up from 200cc to223cc for 2002.
As a special exhebition, you will see the concept model "Tricker," a compact, lightweight machine that proposes a new type of motorcycle experience based on the popular "X games" sporting ideal. Another exhibiton model is the electric model "Passol" powered by a lithium-ion battery to create an entirely new type of urban commuter.
In the PAS electro-hybrid bicycle corner are new models that further expand the PAS world, including the "Folding PAS," a model that folds up for easy storage, and the new sports type PAS "SP-01" with its active design and sporty performance. You will also see the exhibition model "Racer 01," a new design that takes sa its base the "KEIRIN RAS" model that served as the pace cycle in Keirin bicycle racing at the SYdney Olympics.
We have also set up a "Man-Machine Sensuality" Gallery that displays an array of unique Yamaha motorcycle technologies.
In this way, the Yamaha Booth provides an experience of new worlds of motorcycling expressed through a number of media, including sculpture, sound and spatial design. Here you can didcover numeuous expressions of our cprporate philosophy along with the new products.
Introduction of the Models on Display
  • YZF-R1 (Exhibition model / export version)

This is the first model change of the Yamaha YZF-R1 since its release as a '98 model that immediately won the hearts of motorcycle fans everywhere as the "super cornering machine." Developed as a European market model for 2002 on a guiding concept of a "Dynamic Cornering Performer," the YZF-R1 aims to exceed the expectations of fans who called for "a machine that offers even better cornering performance over a wider speed range," and also "a machine that gives even more linear response to throttle work." This new TZF-R1 mounts a newspec engine that boasts improved power development characteristics especially in the high-speed range thanks to major changes in the intake / exhaust specifications, centering on a new fuel injection system. At the same time, the new Deltabox III frame is a further evolution of the existing Deltabox II type that achieves a roughly 30 percent improvement in torsion rigidity. What's more, a variety of other new technologies, weight reduction measures, optimization of dimensions and an overall reduction in machine weight have combined to take the YZF-R1's legendary cornering performance to yet another dimension.

  • TDM900 (Exbibition model / export version)

The new 2002 European market model Yamaha Sports "TDM900" is the first major model change of the popular "TDM850" first released in 1991 with a model concept of "King of the mountain roads." The new model maintains its basic character as a machine that offers spirited, sporty riding performance wherever you ride, from winding mountain roads to the cobblestone of city streets, along with an easy riding position and individualistic styling. Mounting a new larger-bore 900cc engine featuring fuel injection and adjustable intake duct is on a lightweight aluminum frame sporting new-design lightweight wheels with optimaized plate thickness and radial tires front and rear, this model offers a whole new world of performance. On those winding mountain roads it will challenge the supersport class bikes, while on city streets it gives the kind of well-balanced performance riders hope for.

  • Tricker (Exhibition model / prototype)

This concept model was developed around the idea of bringing to motorcycling anxperience inspired by the exciting and physical world of "X games" todays sports lovers enjoy on surfboards, snowboards and BMX bicycles. It mounts an SOHC 223cc engine with great pick-up on a ilghtweight aluminum frame. Featuring a body with a short wheelbase equivalent to that of the YZ85 motocrosser and a low & short-cut seat, it proposes a new type of riding for the future that is nimble and maneuverable like a BMX. Here's a machine designed to offer a combination of the joys of physical sport, the challenge of honing technique and the thrill of showing off those hard-won skills.

  • TW225 (Exhibition model / production model planned)

The best-selling TW200, popular for its distinctive "fat tires, slim body" look, its potential as an attractive base model for customizing and its great performance in around-town riding, has been reborn as the TW225 with a new bored-out 223cc engine. This boosts performance in the most used power range and adds that extra power people want for around town and tandem riding. Other changes include a shortened rear end and new fixtures like the meter panel.

  • Majesty (Exhibition model / production model planned)

The model that pioneered the 250cc scooter class, the Majesty now appears in an even more fully equipped version. New features like a theft-preventing remote control-operated keyhole shutter, a tachometer and multi-information liquid crystal meter functions, extra wadding in the seat and steps for the tandem rider make this model even more complete. Changes in the suspension settings also make for a more comfortable ride. At the same time, exterior appointments like a completely aluminum coated headlight, a red rear flasher lens and redesigned inner panel add to the new look of this model.

  • Majesty C (Exhibition model / production model planned)

This model takes the Majesty and adds a customized look to the exterior. Features like a compact shortened windscreen, bar handlebars, a special-design meter panel, chrome-plated rearview mirror and punched metal sheeting create a distinctive new look.

  • Passol (Exhibition model / prototype)

This new model was developed around the concept of a "Smart Urban Commuter." A quarter of a century after the debut of the original Yamaha Passol, we kept the same "even I can ride it with ease" image and translated it into a completely new type of electric-powered commuting vehicle incorporating advanced control technologies from our PAS electro-hybrid bicycles and a sophisticated human interface. High-precision control technologies produce an exceptionally smooth ride, while the aluminum frame gives an image of refinement and accents the simplicity and compactness of this model. Taking into consideration crowded parking conditions in the urban environment, we made the handlebar a folding type that reduces the overall width to a mere 30 cm.

  • SP-01 (Exhibition model / prototype)

This model proposes an entirely new form of PAS electro-hybrid bicycle that brings together Yamaha technology and the sporting mind. This model features an innovative new shape built around a monocoque frame, 20-inch wheels front and rear for easy and enjoyable around-town riding, smooth pedal drive system, an aluminum rear arm and suspensions front and rear. Its power source is an I.F.E.S. (Intelligent Flexible Energy System) compatible lithium-ion battery.

  • Folding PAS (Exhibition model / prototype)

In order to further expand the fields of use for our PAS electro-hybrid bicycles, we present this new folding type model with 18-inch wheels. It adopts the rear hub unit drive system proven on the PAS Smile to provide an optimum center of gravity for smoother riding. The light aluminum frame with its excellent balance of rigidity helps bring a light and lively feeling when you start to pedal. The center stand acts as a base to provide more stability when stared.

  • Racer 01 (Exhibition model / prototype)

This special exhibition model proposes a completely new type of racing bicycle based on the "KEIRIN PAS" model that served as the pace cycle in the Keirin bicycle racing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Keeping the same PAS units and batteries as the Keirin model, this model offers an innovative and dynamic new design.
