Volvo 2002 Models (1) — S60 Series
The Volvo S60 was introduced in January 2001 as a completely new premium sports saloon, positioned between the S40 and the S80 in Volvo's saloon lineup. Characterized by its streamlined and sporty appearance, excellent aerodynamics (CD : 0.28), and corresponding dynamic maneuverability and driving performance, this car combines Volvo's characteristic attributes of high comfort, safety, and environmental consideration. The high evaluation of the S60 as a saloon that realizes the most sporty and dynamic driving ever for a Volvo is helping to shed the conventional image that "Volvo equals estate car."

In addition, the S60's sporty driving performance and dynamic and modern '4-door sports coupe' design has succeeded in attracting the attention of drivers who had previously shown little interest in Volvo, and people who strongly seek driving pleasure from their cars. This car can be said to represent Volvo in the new century, adding a new image to the Volvo name. The 2002 model lineup also includes the S60 AWD, featuring newly developed, electronically controlled AWD (All-Wheel Drive). Volvo's 2002 models have also been acknowledged as "-25% low emission vehicles against 2000 year standard" in Japan, the first such designation for imported cars.

Volvo 2002 Models (2) — 40 Series, V70 Series, Cross Country and C70 Cabriolet, S80 Series
For 2002, Volvo's main model V70 series and compact model 40 series have new model additions. Topical new additions to the lineup are the S40 and V40 Nordic Special models (car list prices : \3.3 million and \3.45 million respectively) that have more powerful engines and a wide variety of special equipment, concentrating Volvo's attractions into a compact body.

  • S40 & V40 Nordic Specials
Nordic Specials are the value-adcled version of "Nordic", formerly only available for the V40, which have been newly designed also for the S40. The conventional non-turbo DOHC in-line, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, 2.0-liter engine has been switched to a light pressure turbo engine, delivering a maximum power of 120 kW (163 ps) at 5,250 rpm, and maximum torque of 240 Nm (24.5 kg) over the range of 1,800 to 4,500 rpm (DIN). In addition, a wide range of special equipment is provided, including items that were found most popular from user questionnaires, such as specially designed aluminum wheels, a high-performance speaker system that delivers an amazing wide-ranging and high-quality sound, and rear arm rests incorporating cup holders. These models realize the "Volvo for Life" concept through being equipped with all the values sought in Volvo cars, such as beautiful styling, high safety, environmental consideration, pleasurable driving performance, and additional equipment, following the basic concept of Swedish products, that they should pursue practicality and beauty.

  • V70 Series
The V70 series, developed from the 850 Estate which became highly regarded and popular worldwide, has undergone a full model change to become the 'ultimate Volvo estate,' Volvo's car for the next generation. Developed as an estate car from the initial stages — the first time for Volvo to do so — the appearance has been greatly changed from the conventional model into a powerful, sporty form. In the 2002 models, the all-wheel-drive car that previously existed as a package model has been added as the V70AWD, further enriching the lineup.
Based on this new-type V70, the Volvo Cross Country (introduced in September 2000) was developed as an all-wheel drive model for those living active outdoor lives. This unique model targets adventurous outdoor people through having both estate vehicle and SUV characteristics. These include a high-torque engine that realizes full ability even on rough roads, high comfort, and luggage space with excellent flexibility using the world's first 40 : 20 : 40 three-split rear seat. The 2002 models were acknowledged as the first imported "-25% low emission vehicles against 2000 year standard" in Japan.

  • S80 Series
Developed as Volvo's full-scale entry into the luxury saloon field, the S80 is "the ultimate Volvo," representing tireless eftorts to achieve a new body design, the world's top level of safety and comfort, and outstanding engine performance, while maintaining consideration for the environment. The car's safety technology includes features adopted into this series for the first time, such as the ÅeWHIPSÅf anti-whiplash safety seat, and an 'inflatable curtain' airbag that protects the passenger head area in the event of a side collision. The results of side collision tests published in July of this year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA) of the United States Department of Transport awarded the S80 its top score of five stars. It was the first and only one of the 91 models tested that obtained a five-star rating for both the driver's seat and the rear passenger seats. An "exclusive package" only for the S80T-6 has been designed, further clarifying this model's position as the ultimate Volvo. The 2002 models were acknowledged as the first imported "-50% low emission vehicles against 2000 year standard" in Japan.

Concept Cars — SCC, ACC, and PCC
  • Safety Concept Car (SCC)
The SCC is a concept car incorporating a variety of the latest safety technologies not only for collision situations but also to prevent accidents from occurring. When the driver sits in the seat, a sensor detects the driver's eye position, and the seat position automatically adjusts itself to give the driver the best visibility. Further, the positioning of the gear lever and other equipment is all automatically adjusted. Other systems such as a traffic lane change aid system, which uses radar to measure distances from cars behind and to the sides; a traffic lane maintaining aid system, and a front collision warning system, aim to completely eliminate situations that lead to collisions. This model embodies the ultimate evolution of automobile safety in the near future, including the installation of two types of four-point seat belts, called the "crisscross belt" and "center buckle belt," for the best possible restraint in a collision situation.

  • Adventure Concept Car (ACC)
This concept car was exhibited at the Detroit Auto Show in January this year, aiming to challenge the SUV market. As with the Volvo S60, the appearance is of the 'cab forward' type, in which the driver's seat area is close to the front. Also, the nose is slanted down towards the front, but the line is smooth. This is designed to avoid giving an overly aggressive image, while still creating a powerful impression. The design team aimed to make the driver's seat like the cockpit of a jet airplane. As the seat is positioned high up and close to the front, it provides good visibility outside the vehicle and easy operation of instruments in lower positions. This is a concept car suitable to be called the best four-seater, with a cooler box, a TV, and a world-class audio system.

  • performance Concept Car (PCC)
Having the appearance of a racing car, this concept car uses 19-inch magnesium wheels made by BBS, the same as the former Volvo BTCC racing model (S40). The seats are covered with premium soft leather that has a metallic sheen. Under the hood is a Volvo-tuned five-cylinder, 2.4-liter turbo engine of 300ps. The greatest characteristic of this car is Volvo's original dynamically controllable chassis (suspension system). This continuously controlled chassis concept (FOUR-C) has the ability to collect a huge amount of information on the car's movement and adjust the damper characteristics for an immediate response. Also, a computer system called a "multiplex processor system" supplements this system by conveying important information to the dampers and predicting events before they actually happen. There are three chassis modes; "comfort," "sports," and "advanced sports," which the driver may choose using a button on the instrument panel. A newly developed, electronically controlled AWD (All-Wheel Drive) is also included that was jointly developed with Haldex of Sweden.
