Highlights of the smart stand

Presenting itself for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show, the smart offers a new concept of mobility with its innovative engineering and design.
The main highlights at the smart stand are the smart K, a kei-car version specially developed for the Japanese market, and the new RHD model of the smart coupe.
The very first kei-car to come from an imported brand, the smart K is characterized by outstanding levels of safety and economy.

Highlights of vehicles on display
  • smart crossblade (concept model)
The smart crossblade is a leisure car based on the smart cabrio, but it does entirely without any protection from wind and weather: doors, roof, or windscreen. The crossblade driver cruises along in the open air, enjoying the bracing breeze in his face. The car is intended to provide an exhilarating feeling otherwise available only on roller blades or skateboards. The concept study eloquently demonstrates the broad range of possibilities inherent in the smart concept.

  • The smart coupé lines up with a new RHD version
The smart coupé is an entirely new mobility concept geared for "maximum safety, comfort, and environmental compatibility in the minimum size." In designing and developing the city coupé, MCC smart drew on the rich experience behind the Mercedes brand. The car offers a viable solution to problems such as small parking spaces, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution.
Despite its compact dimensions (about 2.5 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width), the smart's distinctive body, which looks as if it has been created by cutting off the rear compartment from an ordinary car, provides a comfortable interior space for two passengers.
The passenger cell offers outstanding crash safety, thanks to the robust TRIDION safety cell made of high-strength steel and the sandwich floor structure similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
The "smart crossblade" concept car sports a dynamic open design with no doors, demonstrating the vast range of possibilities conferred by the smart concept. We are also presenting the new smart hybrid concept as well as the concept of the smart webmove services now available in Europe and visual images of its applications based on Pickwalk and PDAs. Visitors to the smart stand can access the Tokyo Motor Show web pages on the smart Internet site.
In addition to the popular LHD model, MCC smart premieres a more useful RHD version specially adapted to traffic conditions in Japan. In the course of development, some 430 components were newly designed or modified to make the new version easy to drive and operate.

  • smart K: a new development conforming to Japanese kei-car standards
The smart K is RHD model designed to the Japanese kei-car standards. Its body width has been reduced to 1,470 millimeters by redesign of the rear fenders, shortening of track width, and fitting of narrower tires. In the new kei-car version, the TRIDION safety cell, steel roof, and radiator grille are painted black. A choice of four body colors gives the smart K a distinctive external appearance.
The tone of the interior is set by a bright scodic gray, a color reserved exclusively for the smart K. The new smart K is fitted with standard comfort features such as power windows and air-conditioning.
The all-round crash safety standarsds achieved by the smart K are primarily due to the TRIDION safety cell and the sandwich floor structure. Like all models of the smart, the new kei-car model has passed the offset frontal crash test at 64 km/h, and it also conforms to stringent Mercedes safety requirements.

  • smart cabrio : refreshing open-top motoring
For those who love the snrlart's nimble footwork, the smart cabrio offers the most personalized approach to open-top driving. The body of the smart cabrio features distinctive individual design elements in the body panels, radiator grille, front headlamps and rear lamps. The TRITOP three-way soft-top is characterized by outstanding comfort, weather resistance, and ease of maintenance. The innovative soft-top allows three open-top configurations, from a slightly open position like that of a sunroof to a fully open state with the roof frame removed.
The passenger cell features a TRIDION safety cell specially developed for the cabrio. The reduced rigidity inherent in an open-top model has been successfully offset with reinforcements, including a rollover bar connecting the rear pillars.
The vehicle on display has been modified to enable it to use the Docomo Pickwalk as a sound source for the audio system.

  • Three-cylinder turbo engine from Mercedes
The smart coupé, smart K, and smart cabrio are powered by a powerful three-cylinder inline turbo engine from Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to the intercooler, which improves charge efficiency, the power plant delivers sufficient power despite its small displacementÅFoutput is 40 kW/55 hp, and maximum torque is 80 N•m (8.2 kgm).
When the driver needs fast acceleration, in an overtaking maneuver, for example, the overboost function can temporarily raise turbocharger pressure to provide an extra 10 percent of boost. The engine is also fitted with an electronically controlled throttle system that ensures excellent response. The cylinder block and cylinder head of the turbo engine are made of aluminum alloy to reduce engine weight and noise.
With dual ignition, each cylinder has two spark plugs. This innovative technology improves the combustion process, increasing power and torque and reducing noise and pollutant emissions. The multi-point injection system, which supplies fuel to individual cylinders independently, increases engine response and fuel efficiency.

  • SOFTOUCH six - speed automatic transmission with manual mode
All smart models are fitted with the SOFTOUCH six-speed automatic transmission that can be switched to sporty manual mode. At the touch of a button, manual mode can be activated. The absence of the conventional torque converter allows the transmission to reduce power loss and fuel consumption. With its efficient engine and innovative transmission, the smart achieves excellent fuel economy of 19.0 km/liter (l0/15 mode) .
