Toyota and Daihatsu regerd the Tokyo Motor Show as an opportunity to propose new possibilities of vehicles, so we have displayed various special vehicles and introduced new technologies. At this year's motor show, we introduce innovative technological developments such as environmentally-friendly advances for various tpyes of vehicles including minicars and large vehicles, bearing "dreamy new mobility life" in mind, and suggest the joy of driving and the pleasure of using vehicles, which are the essential attractiveness of vehicles. Based on this concept, we are displaying altogether seventeen cars from twelve different models, including ten prototype cars, in the three categories of Ecology, Sports and New Concept, together with our latest technologies.

<Ecology>
On display are innovative, environmentally friendly technologies for the development or cars which respect the conservation of the global environment ans incorporate fuel-efficient technology that reduces CO₂ emissions, technology for clean emissions and technology for recycling.

• UFE
  This is a hybrid minicar to seat four people with an ASV* stytem that was developed for extremely high fuel efficiency aiming at the goal 55km/l (Japanese10•15 mode).
  
  (1)Extremely high fuel efficiency
  • Driving resistance is reduced by features such as a lightweight body made of aluminum and plastic(car weight of 630kg)and excellent aerodymnamics of Cd 0.25.
  • The car has a hybrid system that incorporates a 660cc direct injection gasoline engine, two motors and a nickel-metal hydride battery.
    
    
(2)ASV system
• The UFE incorporates brake to significantly reduce the risk of collisions, car following driving control, a speed control system for cornering and a lane deviation alarm.
  
  
(3)Good aerodynamic design and stream-like interior
• The body has excellent aerodynamic features thanks to the cut tail teardrop design ans super aerodynamic style incorporating the latest component technology.
• The UFE has a stream-like inner design by lines from an instrument panel shaped like bird wings towards the rear lounge seats that are united with the car wall.
  
  

• MOVE FCV-K-II
  Daihatsu displayed a fuel cell minecar (a methanol reformer model) at the 1999 motor show. On display this year is the fourseater MOVE FCV-K-II which is the first fuel cell minicar powered by compressed hydrogen.
  • A high-performance fuel cell called a "Toyota FC Stack" with a maximum output of 30kW is installed under the rear floor.
  • Uses the fuel cell and a nickel-metal hydride secondary battery.
  • The combination of the motor and CVT realizes highly efficient energy regeneration during driving.
    
    

• ATRAI HYBRID-IV
  This is a hybrid minicar to seat four people with a 660cc gasoline engine and a motor which realizes fuel-efficiency and produces much cleaner emissions thanks to Toyota's hybrid technology.
  • Fuel consumption is down by approximately 30% thanks to the idling stop system which operates when the car stops and the regeneration of energy while braking.
  • Emissions meet the ultra low emission level.
    
    

<Sports>
A new sports car developed for the joy and pleasure of driving which is the basic appeal of cars is displayd.

• COPEN
  Bringing you new pleasure is this two-seater convertible minicar with a hardtop which opens electrically.
  • 2-seater glamorous new design silhouette with a forward cabin.
  • Highly tuned suspension and the 660cc twin cam 4-cylinder engine with a new turbocharger designed to produce a good response give a direct exhilarating driving feel.
  • Don't wonder about the season or the weather, the electrically-opening aluminum hardtop allows active use.
    
    

<New concept>
Daihatsu pursues new values for vehicles and now introduces new-concept cars with new functions suitable for the new century, including communications using information technology.

• FF Ultra Space
  This is a next generation concept wagon with the size of a minicar which offers relaxing private space.

• U4B
  The U4B is a new type of stylish minicar with the comforts of a sedan and the functions of an SUV.
  • The entire exterior has an intimate roundness which complements nature.
  • Interior with a high quality, modern and casual atmosphere.
  • The compact body and large diameter wheels are good for off-road driving performance.
