At the first Tokyo Motor Show in the third miilennium, BMW is setting a clear sign for the future : The absolute star of the show is the new 7 Series combining revolutionary solutions with evolutionary technology in a progressive body. Oftering the iDrive control concept, the BMW 7 Series provides a unique range of functions and, at the same time, a drastic reduction and reorientation of control elements. New 8-cylinder power units with an unprecedented range of control and management functions plus the world's first six-speed automatic transmission improve both fuel economy and performance by 14 per cent.

  • The 745h is a new 7 Series saloon with hydrogen drive. The prototype of a hydrogen-drive 7 Series clearly underlines the cutting-edge technology of BMW's new top-of-the-range saloon. BMW's first zero-emission 8-cylinder offers unrestricted driving pleasure on the basis of an inexhaustible source of energy, standing out as the youngest product in BMW's CleanEnergy initiative.
The objective of the hydrogen-drive 7 Series is to consistently introduce hydrogen into the market in a strategy given additional momentum by the 2001 CleanEnergy WorldTour.

  • The new 7 Series is also the first product to become reality with another concept for the future developed by BMW : ConnectedDrive is the name of a fully integrated solution for the future interaction of the driver, the car and the environment on the road, To be specific, ConnectedDrive serves to relieve the driver of routine chores through the intelligent interaction and cooperation of assistance systems, allowing the driver to concentrate on his - or her - responsibility and the thrill of enjoying sheer driving pleasure.

BMW Williams F1 FW23 (Special exhibit)

BMW has returned to the Formula 1 World Championship with ambitious goals and impressive success. BMW regards Formula 1 as a challenge to the art of engineering, and deveiops and produces all engine components down to the electronic control units in Munich.
The Formula 1 factory was built just a few hundred metres from the BMW research and innovation centre, the so-called "FIZ". The Formula 1 team, which now has some 220 members, can thus draw on the laboratories and resources of this BMW nerve centre. The benefits go both ways : the FIZ engineers can explore a whole new territory of ideas when they become involved with Formula 1. As part of the search for very light and highly resilient materials for Formula 1 - particularly those with a high thermal resistance - substances are tested and developed which then lose their exotic character and may weli be used for serial production purposes.
With third position in the first season, along with four wins and four pole positions in the first 15 races of the second year, BMW has far exceeded its own objectives for 2001. For next year, the BMW WilliamsF1 Team with Raff Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya has set its sights on further victories and second place in the Constructors' Championship. In 2003 the run on the title itself will commence.

The M3 CSL is a lightweight sports car repersenting an entirely new consept. The BMW M3 CSL Concept Car and the revised, updated 3 Series bear clear testimony to the features and characters so typical of the brand Å| features you can already experience today. Capitalising on lightweight potentials, the CSL offers the power and performance of a thoroughbred sports car of the highest calibre : This high-potential version of the M3 comes with a power-to-weight ratio under 3.5 kg/ps not only making the M3 a keen competitor in terms of its performance data, but also enabling the driver to enjoy the genuine experience of Formula 1 with the SMG gearbox and Drivelogic. Incorporating two paddles on the steering wheel for shifting gears by wire, this trendsetting gearshift has paved the way for the more or less identical system now also available in the 325i and 330i.

The 3 Series stands out in new glory for the new model year with its sports suspension and an even clearer, more distinctive look on the saloon and touring. This progress is then further enhanced not only by the Sequential Manual Gearbox already mentioned, but also by new engines and an extended range of series equipment.

  • MINI
Following the successful introduction of the MINl One and MINI Cooper in Europe, this agile four-seater is now making its debut in Japan. At the same time the top model in the range, the MINI Cooper S, is appearing for the first time worldwide at theTokyo Motor Show.
At the Tokyo Motor Show the MINI brand is proudly presenting the MINI One, MINI Cooper and MINl Cooper S, in many ways introducing the best technology currently to be found in this segment. And the genes and characteristics of the original MINl are naturally to be found again in many emotional components of the new model.
Al1 three MINls are powered by a 4-cylinder 16-valve engine displacing 1.6 litres. In the MINI One this power unit develops maximum output of 66 kW/90 ps, giving the car s top speed of 185 km/h, ensuring acceleration to 100 km/h in just 10.9 seconds and making do with 6.5 litres of fuel per 100 km in the EU combined cycle.
The dynamic MINI Cooper S featuring a six-speed manual gearbox comes with a supercharger ensuring maximum output of no less than 120 kW/163 ps. Top speed is 218 km/h acceleration to 100 km/h coming in just 7.4 seconds. At 8.4 litres/100 km fuel consumption is again remarkably low for a car of this calibre.
